Electronic Resources in Further Education libraries

Electronic resources

The majority of libraries in East Midlands Further Education Colleges subscribe to electronic resources for access by their staff and registered students. A total of 235 titles are subscribed to at the start of 2011.

Judi Millage, Assistant Manager at the JISC Regional Support Centre East Midlands, has collated and updated information from across the region, which is summarised here:

"Top Titles"

The most ‘popular’ titles are listed below for the awareness of library and information professionals. A very diverse range of titles is taken by colleges across the region, from 'Arboriculture and Urban Forestry', through 'Grove Art Online' and 'Institute of Civil Engineers Virtual Library' to 'The Wildlife Information Network'.
 

e-Books for FE: core collections of e-books relevant to the FE curriculum across the UK with almost 3,000 e-book titles available. Unlimited, simultaneous user access means that unlike the print world students do not have to wait for the hard copies to be returned by other students or borrow under short loan conditions.

Film & Sound onlinea set of collections of film, video and sound material, funded by JISC. Several hundred hours of high-quality material are available for download, either in full or as segments, and can be used freely in learning, teaching and research.

Hairdressing Training:
provides photographic step by step guides combined with lessons and handy tips and techniques, suiting a variety of learning styles. Students can study and revise within the college, at home or even at work allowing greater flexibility. The content from this resource can be easily downloaded and incorporated into learning materials, course packs and student portfolios. Hairdressing Training for Mobiles has been nominated as a finalist in the Handheld Learning Awards 2008.

Infotrac: access to a wide range of UK and international newspapers and journals.

Issues Online: contemporary social issues e.g. homelessness, poverty, gender, crime. Includes: factsheets, newspaper reports and features,magazine articles, journal and book extracts, extracts from Government reports and statistics, pressure-group literature, statistics, including tables and graphs, cartoons and illustrations.

News Film Online: access to film and television news content to users throughout UK higher and further education.. Selected news from the ITN/Reuters archives. Video playback and downloading are available to staff and students at subscribing UK universities and colleges.

Oxford Reference: a cross-searchable collection with over 100 dictionary, language reference and subject reference works published by the OUP It combines in depth content offered by titles in the acclaimed Oxford Companions series with authoritative, quick reference coverage of the full subject spectrum. It is possible to search over one million entries across 25 subject areas.There is also a Timelines link to events in 20th century.
