The British Library
Thinking allowed - libraries are the place for inspiration
In 2005/6 LIEM hosted a regional touring exhibition to promote awareness of the resources of the British Library. The exhibition highlighted treasures from the nation and the region and showed how inspiration, invention and investigation have helped to shape our society.
The British Library's award-winning Turning the Pages touch screen kiosk, providing on screen acces to twelve of the British Library's treasures including the Lindisfarne Gospels, Leonardo da Vinci's sketchbooks and the oldest printed book, The Diamond Sutra, was well used and enjoyed by visitors to the exhibition.
The exhibition was displayed in a range of venues across the East Midlands including Buxton Museum, the Universities of Northampton and Nottingham Trent, the British Geological Survey and the Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland Archives Office and several public libraries including Lincoln, Nottingham and Northampton Central Libraries and Mansfield Library in Nottinghamshire.
The Gospels on tour
The East Midlands is currently hosting another set of touring exhibition banners featuring the Lindisfarne and St Chad's Gospels, the Luttrell Psalter and Sherborne Missal. A facsimile copy of the Luttrell Psalter is also available together with the Turning the Pages touch screen kiosk . The exhibition has been displayed at Oakham Library in Rutland and in Nottingham at the Central Library. The exhibiton is now on display at the University of Leicester Library until mid July 2008
Sacred on location
In 2007 the British Library held a hugely successful "Sacred" exhibition featuring three faiths; Islam, Christianity and Judaism at its St Pancras site. Sacred on location - a regional learning programme, toured the country and two venues in the East Midlands were selected to host the exhibition which was housed in a Mongolian style yurt. Rutland County Museum at Oakham and the University of Derby's Multi-faith Centre worked with schools and local communities to deliver a programme of activites and events linked with faith.
