Teaching Skills for Library Staff

Do you deliver sessions on information literacy?  Want ideas to make it more effective and interesting?  This session is for you.

A one-day course on Teaching Skills for Library Staff, run by Chris Powis, will be held on Thursday 15th November 2018 at the Leicester Creative Business Depot from 9.45 am to 4.30 pm.

The course which aims to build on participants’ current experiences of teaching information skills in libraries and learning centres, offers stimulating discussion and an excellent opportunity to share experiences.   If you are working with young people, students, small groups of library users or staff this course will help you develop your skills as a teacher and trainer.

Practical tips for teaching library users will be set within a theoretical framework of teaching and learning.

Cost for participants from LIEM member organisations is £70.00 (£90.00 for non-members) and includes lunch and refreshments.

Aims

To enable participants to understand theories of teaching and learning and to map these on to their own experience of teaching.

To provide participants with strategies to plan, deliver, assess and evaluate their teaching activities.

About the facilitator

 Chris Powis is Head of Library and Learning Services at the University of Northampton.

Chris is a National Teaching Fellow and wrote this programme with Jo Webb. He has delivered this programme to a wide range of audiences across the UK, Hungary, Slovakia and Finland. Chris and Jo wrote Teaching Information Skills: Theory and Practice, published by Facet in 2004 and 101 Tips for Information Literacy Teaching (with Helen Blanchett), published in November 2011 by Facet.

Developing Exciting and Memorable Training

Do you fear how little your learners actually remember?

Do you want to pass on information and knowledge effectively?

Do you know how to gauge the learning style of each of your learners?

If so this workshop is for you.

This is a one day workshop to help people identify what makes training enjoyable, memorable and something that people can take back into their workplaces and use with confidence.

Every individual learns differently but if we’re going to have them all in one room on training courses we need to understand them and be skilled in finding innovative and varied ways to deliver training and engage people in learning.

The workshop will cover:

  • Using presentation tools effectively – no more death by PowerPoint!
  • Understanding how people learn
  • Developing ‘brain friendly’ exercises that help people learn and retain learning most   effectively
  • Managing challenging learners

By the end of the workshop participants will:

  • Understand how different people learn
  • Have some clarity about how best to use PowerPoint
  • Have developed techniques for identifying engaging exercises and activities
  • Have investigated techniques to manage changing agendas and challenging participants

The workshop includes a pre-work questionnaire on Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences and a commitment to review the learning and how it can be implemented for six months following the event.

About the facilitator

Carol Brooks is a learning specialist who runs Chrysalis Development and is a ‘Brain Friendly’ Trainer. She has facilitated this workshop on a number of occasions with some superb feedback. A Fellow of CILIP she has worked with libraries for over 40 years.

Motivate, Learn, Lead
A cross-sectoral leadership programme for LIS middle managers

Libraries and Information East Midlands is once again offering an opportunity to develop leadership and influencing skills and to network with library, information and archives colleagues through its Motivate, Learn, Lead cross-sectoral leadership programme.

Twelve places are available on the programme which is specifically designed for practitioners at middle management level. There are four one-day modules which will take place from November 2018 to March 2019. A half day review session will be held in autumn 2019. As part of the package, a virtual classroom session is offered between modules 2 & 3.

Aim:

The programme aims to bring together staff from different LIS sectors to develop their personal leadership and influencing skills and to enhance understanding and networking across the sectors. 

Specific objectives are to:
  • Build personal confidence to provide leadership during times of change
  • Create a better understanding of self and the impact of one’s own leadership style and behaviours
  • Develop skills to motivate and influence team members, colleagues and partners during challenging times
  • Know how to empower, coach and develop team members and colleagues to achieve results
  • Use creative approaches to encourage fresh thinking and service improvements
  • Develop partnership and advocacy skills in the libraries context, supporting the cross sectoral agenda
Facilitator: 

The programme will be facilitated by Diana Edmonds of Bridgford Consultancy. Bridgford Consultancy works with organisations – in the public, private, and not- for-profit sectors – to develop leadership, team-working and customer service.

Diana has experience of delivering development programmes for library, information and archive services colleagues on many occasions. She is passionate about the importance of people development in achieving organisational success.

The emphasis will be on personal learning and the development of skills and a variety of training methods will be used including questionnaires, discussions, small and large group activities, presentations, team coaching and more. Whilst stretching and challenging course participants, Diana makes a point of adapting to the group, helping people feel at ease and importantly, ensuring they enjoy the programme!

Venue: 

The sessions will be held in a variety of library venues to allow participants to see different services. All venues will be in Nottingham near mainline rail stations and on bus routes. Although venues have been booked, changes may be made to reflect the needs of participants.

Cost:The programme is heavily subsidised by LIEM and the cost per participant will be £400 for LIEM member organisations and £600 for non-members. Member organisations will receive priority for places.

Participants:

All participants will meet the following criteria:

  • Have experience of leading people and/or services either through line management or project work
  • See themselves as future leaders
  • Be employed in library, information or archives work in the East Midlands
  • Have the commitment and ability to put their learning into practice
  • Be willing to commit time to pre and post module work through reading and sharing information/experiences with other participants
  • Have commitment to attend all sessions
  • Have the support of their manager and be able to identify someone who will act as their mentor.

Participants must be able to attend all sessions.

Motivate, Learn, Lead 2018-2019

The 13th Motivate course will run from December 2018 to September 2019 with spaces for 12 participants.
One participant from last year got promotion following the course and said of her interview: “I went armed with all the benefit of all the training, and in particular the Change Management stuff, and have no doubt that it helped a great deal (both in being able to answer questions and because I’d utilised it and had examples based on the theory).”
This is the power of the course – a really practical way to develop your management skills.
The course is aimed at middle management level for managers of teams or services.  Run over four full days and with a two hour webinar in the middle, the course is both intensive and fun.  At the end, for the Review session, participants will work in teams to present their learning on their chosen subjects.

Motivate 2017-18 will finish with a Review Session in September when they will present what they have learnt to the Training Team of LIEM.

This is a course which greats great reviews and has helped many people over the years to move onwards and upwards in their careers.

Presentation Skills for Library Professionals

The amazing Ned Potter is due to return to the East Midlands to share his knowledge on making presentations exciting and memorable. This is a hands-on course, exploring in detail what it means to create brilliant presentations. There is a blend of ideas, examples, and hands-on time, that gets everyone up to speed on what truly matters with presenting in a Library context.
The morning session covers the golden rules of creating presentations (all based on peer-reviewed research), finding amazing images without breaking copyright laws or spending any money, and creating PowerPoint Presentations in three different styles. The three styles vary in complexity and flexibility so you can choose which to use for a given presentation.
The afternoon introduces alternatives to PowerPoint such as a Kahoot (an interactive quiz tool) and Prezi (a zooming presentation tool), covers when and when not to use these, and how to use them most effectively. The final section of the day centres around researching presentations, delivering talks and teaching, and conquering nerves.
This course is for staff at all levels who are involved in training, presenting and communicating any aspect of the IT, library and information service It will be invaluable to any professional keen to improve engagement with users.  Book using this form

Latest training opportunities announced

The latest list of training courses has just been released and is available in our newsletter.  We are excited to be running the Art of Influence and Conflict Resolution by Diana Edmonds again in June.  Ned Potter is coming back in July to do his amazing presentation skills course – definitely not one to miss!  Then in October we are laying on a new course on how to ensure you deliver really exciting, fun and memorable training when you deliver training yourselves.  November will see the return of Teaching Skills for Library Staff and in February we are having an exchange of experience session with great speakers to look at how we can better engage young people in reading.

Finally in this batch there will, of course, be a further Motivate, Learn, Lead programme for middle managers and aspiring leaders.  The 12th programme is almost complete and we will release the information for applications to the 13th programme in June.
